State of the Union Garners Record Online Buzz

On January 24, President Obama delivered his third State of the Union; Using Infegy’s Social Radar, we found that the address led to Obama’s highest online buzz in the last 12 months. Combined, Obama and the State of the Union were mentioned in 1.9% of all online conversations during the last two days, slightly edging out the 2011 State of the Union and the death of Osama Bin Laden.

Most of the conversations about the State of the Union occurred on micro-blogs (86%), while a small percentage occurred on blogs and forums.

Meanwhile, a sentiment analysis revealed that 56% of State of the Union-related mentions were positive, while 40% were negative and 4% were mixed. The negative mentions were primarily driven by topics related to the Republican Party. This included the party’s rebuttal to the State of the Union as well as the address itself, which drew “sharp contrasts with Republicans on such high-profile issues as taxes and the housing market…”
